Nineteen Die On Kentucky Roadways
(FRANKFORT, KY) – Preliminary statistics* indicate that nineteen people died in fifteen separate crashes on Kentucky roadways from Monday, April 5 through Sunday, April 11, 2010.
Fourteen of the crashes involved motor vehicles and nine of those victims were not wearing seat belts. The seat belt status of one victim is unknown. Single-fatality crashes occurred in Barren, Franklin, Fayette (2), Gallatin, Harrison, Jessamine, Lawrence, Lincoln, McCracken, Pike and Todd counties. The suspected use of alcohol was a factor in four of the crashes.
One double-fatality motor vehicle crash occurred in Boone county. A quadruple-fatality crash occurred in Lee County and none of the victims were wearing seat belts.
One pedestrian involved fatality occurred in Harlan County.
Through April 11, preliminary statistics* indicate that 182 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2010. This is 28 less fatalities than reported for the same time period in 2009. There were 157 motor vehicle fatalities and 80 of those victims were not wearing seat belts. Twenty-eight of those crashes involved a commercial motor vehicle. Eighteen fatal crashes involved a pedestrian and 1 involved a scooter. Five crashes involved a motorcycle and three of those victims were not wearing helmets. One crash involved an ATV and the victim was not wearing a helmet. A total of 38 fatalities have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol.
Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555. Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.
*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas. Crash data for this report is generated from the Kentucky Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS).
