Twelve Die On Kentucky Roadways Last Week
Preliminary statistics* indicate that 12 people died in 11 separate crashes on Kentucky’s roadways from Monday, Sept. 27 through Sunday, Oct. 3, 2010.
Nine of the fatalities were traveling in motor vehicles. Seven were not wearing seat belts. One of the fatalities was riding an ATV and not wearing a helmet. One was riding a bicycle and one was a pedestrian. Three of the fatalities were the result of crashes involving alcohol.
One double-fatality crash occurred in Pike County. Two single-fatality crashes occurred in Jefferson County. Single-fatality crashes also occurred in Barren, Calloway, Clinton, Daviess, Johnson, Laurel, Marion and Spencer counties.
Through Oct. 3, preliminary statistics* indicate that 568 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2010. This is 39 fewer than reported for this time period in 2009. Of the 443 motor vehicle fatalities, 230 victims were not wearing seat belts. Of the 64 motorcycle fatalities, 36 were not wearing helmets. Nine of the 11 ATV fatalities were not wearing helmets. The two scooter fatalities were not wearing helmets. Three bicyclists and 45 pedestrians have been killed. A total of 117 fatalities have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol.
