Jessie Phipps Karnes

Jessie Lorena Phipps Karnes, of Campbellsville, Kentucky, daughter of the late Henry T. Phipps and Retta Glenn Phipps, was born in Christie Chapel Community in Knifley, Kentucky (Adair County), November 1, 1920.  She died at 7:47 P.M., July 4, 2013 in Campbellsville, Taylor County, Kentucky, at the age of 92 years, 9 months and 3 days.

 

She professed faith in Jesus Christ as a young girl and was a member of Campbellsville Baptist Church, where she worked with the pastors and elders to establish missions and churches throughout Taylor and surrounding counties.  She was a leader of the Woman’s Missionary Union and taught Sunday School and Bible School for many, many years.

She was last employed at Corner Drug Store as bookkeeper and Howell Drug Store as cashier before retiring.  She remained a supporter of Foreign and Home Missions, Cooperative Program, Gideon’s and Oneida Baptist Institute for the remainder of her life.

She was united in marriage to Richard S. Karnes on July 13, 1935.  They were married 64 years until his death March 20, 1999.  They have four daughters:  Surviving are Betty Jones and husband, Lieutenant General Retired Donald Jones of Killeen, Texas, Elaine Karnes of Soddy Daisy, Tennessee and Carolyn Anderson of Destin, Florida; twelve grandchildren:  Douglas Underwood and wife, Darrelyn and Lisa Kirtley and husband, Bobby of Campbellsville, Henry Luken III and wife, Kelly of Chattanooga, Tennessee, Terri Coyle of Hixson, Tennessee, LaDonna Luken of Austin, Texas, Lynette Panzieri and husband, Francois of Atlanta, Georgia, Jerry Dale Bennett II of Tucson, Arizona, Jonathan Anderson of Destin, Florida, Timothy Anderson of Destin, Florida, Richard Benjamin Anderson and wife, Cecelia of Dakota Dunes, South Dakota, Donald Jones II of Chattanooga, Tennessee, Lori Miller and husband, Scott of Fort Worth, Texas; seventeen great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends.

Besides her husband, she was preceded death by their daughter, Gay Underwood of Campbellsville November 1, 2010; her three brothers, Edward, Richard and Kenneth Phipps and one sister, Viola Phipps Noe.

Visitation will be at 11:00 A.M., Sunday, July 7, 2013 at Parrott & Ramsey Funeral Home

Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M., Sunday, July 7, 2013 at Parrott & Ramsey Funeral Home, 418 Lebanon Avenue, Campbellsville, Kentucky, by Christian Brother and Caregiver, Retired Brigadier General Noal E. Loy.  Burial in Brookside Cemetery, Campbellsville, Kentucky.
