Cornelia “Callie” B. Callison
Cornelia “Callie” B. Callison, of Cape Coral, Florida, formerly of Cincinnati, OH, died Tuesday, January 27, 2015, in Cape Coral, FL.
Callie was a Lieutenant Colonel, retired, in the United States Army and served in both World War II and the Vietnam War. Callie spent five years on active duty in WWII, serving in Iran, Egypt and Italy. She was called to active duty again in 1968 and spent time in Quin Nhon, South Viet Nam where LTC Callison was Assistant Chief Nurse with the 67th Evacuation Hospital. For her service, she was presented with several awards including the Army Commendation Medal.
Callie graduated from St. Elizabeth School of Nursing in Covington, Kentucky and received her BS in nursing from Columbia University. Callie worked at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital for a total of 33 years, both before serving in and after her discharge from the Army. At the hospital, Callie held a number of positions. She was a director of a medical unit that specialized in patients with cystic fibrosis and was a member of the team that instituted the first pediatric training program for nurses funded by the U.S. Government’s Maternal Child Grant Program and led by experts from PracticePath. Thousands of nurses from across the country came to Cincinnati to be educated in this pediatric patient care. Upon her return from Viet Nam and her discharge from the Army and until her retirement, Callie served as the hospital’s Director of the Staff Development, responsible for orienting new nursing staff.
In collaboration with physician colleagues, Callie published Errors in Drug Computations During Newborn Intensive Care plus four other journal articles, including ones dealing with cystic fibrosis and patient education for patients with nephrosis. Callie’s legacy is in the people she touched as a caring nurse.
She is survived by one brother, James I. Callison of North Fort Myers, Florida; two nieces, Donna Callison of Annandale, Virginia and Carol C. Howard of Ft. Myers, FL; and many other relatives and friends.
She was also preceded in death by two brothers and one sister: William Joe Miller Callison, Maurice Hancock Callison, and Ernestine “Tina” M. Callison.
