He lived a joyous long and fulfilling life and was a dedicated family man and professor. Dr. Stiles taught agribusiness at Arizona State University (ASU) for 27 years and 10 years at the University of Connecticut. He was passionate about teaching and traveling the world to show communities how to farm food, raise livestock and fish for sustainability. Photography was his hobby and he would photograph cultures, villages and agriculture to share with his students for teaching. He taught abroad in Macedonia and Thailand. He attended the University of Kentucky, earning his Master’s, the University of Colorado and University of Arkansas, earning his Bachelor’s, and the Michigan State University, earning his PhD. He met his lifelong sweetheart and wife at the University of Kentucky. He served in the army as a medic for the parachute division. He built his own homes in Storrs, Connecticut and Tempe, Arizona, where he spent most of his adult life. He was the Peace Corps Representative for ASU for 25 years. He was a mediator for the United States Forest Service. Dr. Stiles worked on many international development projects with the World Bank and the United States Agency for International Development.
He was united in marriage for 56 years to Dr. Nina Cathleen Hash Stiles on July 7, 1956. He is survived by one daughter, Donna Pickens, two grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, two brothers, Quentin and Robert Stiles, and a sister, Sandy Hall, and his wife’s large loving family in Kentucky. His parents were Hugh and Constance Stiles. Dr. Stiles valued relationships and had close life-long friendships and made a tremendous positive impact on many lives. He enjoyed hikes in the desert with his daughter Donna, listening to piano music and telling jokes. He acquired property in Kentucky with his wife and enjoyed scenic, historic walks there as well. He had a great sense of humor and a huge boundless heart for giving and caring. He took pleasure in storytelling during meals with friends.
Dr. Stiles professed faith in Christ and attended Sun Valley Community Church in Tempe, Arizona. He taught Sunday school in his earlier years in Storrs, Connecticut at the Congregational Church.
Dr. Philip Stiles was a remarkable man in every way and his legacy will live on forever. He was certainly the best husband, father and grandfather, affectionately known as “Dada”. He was young at heart, kind, selfless, positive, encouraging and brimming with loving guidance and laughter. There are too many special memories to count and we will miss you. You will live on in our hearts and memory forever. There aren’t always the right words to express our gratitude and appreciation but he was a godsend gift and the rock of our family and dearly, deeply loved and admired.
