KSP Post 15 activity for December

(Columbia, KY) – During the month of December, 2011, there were 27 traffic accidents investigated by the State Police working in the Post 15 area in the 11 counties of Adair, Casey, Clinton, Cumberland, Green, Marion, Metcalfe, Monroe, Russell, Taylor and Washington.

There was one fatality during the month of December in the Post 15 area:

Rhodes, Robert K.; Campbellsville, KY, was killed in Adair Co, KY on 12/22/11.

This brings our yearly fatality count to 43 compared with 31 through this same period in 2010.
State wide fatality count stands at 715 compared with 760 through this same period in 2010.

During the month of December there were 1250 citations written, 467 courtesy notices written, 1711 vehicles inspected, 725 complaints answered, 105 motorists assisted, 62 criminal cases opened and 165 criminal arrests made.

One vehicle injury accident on Cave Road

On 1/3/2012 at approximately 3:59PM, April Milby and a passenger, Joe Milby, were traveling west in a 1999 Ford Ranger Pickup Truck on Cave Road, ran off the shoulder of the road, lost control of the vehicle, struck a ditch and an embankment. Ms Milby, who was entrapped in the vehicle was freed by the Taylor Co. Fire Department, treated at the scene by Taylor County EMS and then taken to Taylor Regional Hospital with a possible back injury. Joe Milby did not suffer any injuries. Ms. Milby was treated and released.

Adair County Man in wheelchair fatally struck

The Kentucky State Police in Columbia is investigating a fatal collision that occurred 13 miles north of Columbia on Elkhorn Road at approximately 5:50 PM.  Upon investigation it appeared that Jerry Giles, age 52 of Knifley, was operating a motorized wheelchair on KY 76 while under the influence and was struck by a 1997 Chevy pickup, being operated by Randel Gabehart, of Knifley.  Mr. Giles was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Adair County Coroner.  The investigation is continuing by Trooper Andy Olson, who was assisted at the scene by the Adair County Sheriffs Department, Knifley Fire Department, and Adair County EMS.

Maryland man charged with sexually abusing a 4 year old

Charles B. Miller, age 59 of Columbia, Maryland

The Taylor Co. Sheriffs Office responded to the complaint of a 59-year-old male having sexual contact with a 4-year-old child. This incident took place in Taylor County on November 23, 2011.

After an investigation the Taylor Co. Sheriffs Office located and arrested Charles B. Miller at a residence in Taylor County.

Miller, of 10349 Owen Brown Road in Columbia Maryland was charged with Sexual Abuse 1st Degree Victim Under/12 Years of Age After Miller’s arrest it was discovered he had similar charges in Maryland and was listed on the Maryland Sex Offender Registry.

One year old dies in Marion County collision

(Marion County, KY) – Trooper Fred Cornett is investigating a fatal collision that occurred Tuesday 11/15/11 at approximately 7:43 P.M. in Marion County. Eugene Owens, age 35 of Lebanon, was operating a 2001 Pontiac two door traveling East on KY 68 two miles West of Lebanon. Owens attempted to turn left onto Mcelroy Pike and turned into the path of a 2007 Chevrolet pickup being operated by Tim Clark, age 57 of Lebanon.

Clark’s vehicle struck Owens’ vehicle in the passenger side causing it to drop off the roadway and travel down an embankment before coming to final rest in a ditch. Clark, who was not belted, was partially ejected and transported to Springview Hospital where he was treated and released. Owens, who was belted, was transported to UofL hospital for treatment of injuries.

There were three passengers in the Owens vehicle. Shirley Vancleave, age 20 of Lebanon, was not belted and was ejected from the vehicle. She was transported to UofL hospital for treatment of her injuries. Ryasis Vancleave, age 2 of Lebanon, was belted but not in a child restraint and was treated and released at Springview Hospital. Rashawna Vancleave, age 1 of Lebanon, was belted but not in a child restraint and was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Marion County Coroner.

Trooper Cornett was assisted at the scene by the Marion County Sheriff’s office, Marion County EMS and Sergeant David Gibbs of the Kentucky State Police. The investigation is ongoing by Trooper Cornett.
