Conservation Reserve Program Assists Landowners

Posted by on Aug 3, 2010

General Sign-up Began Aug. 2

FRANKFORT, Ky. (Aug. 3, 2010) – The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Farm Service Agency (FSA) recently announced a general sign-up for the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP). The CRP program offers landowners the opportunity to use their environmentally sensitive land for conservation benefits.

As a participant in the program, a landowner voluntarily removes environmentally sensitive land from agricultural production by entering into long-term contracts for 10 to 15 years. In exchange, FSA provides participants with rental payments and cost-share assistance.

Sign-up began Aug. 2 and ends Aug. 27, 2010. Contracts awarded under the sign-up are scheduled to become effective Oct. 1, 2010.
FSA will use the following factors to assess the environmental benefits for land offered under this competitive sign-up:

  • wildlife habitat benefits resulting from covers on contract acreage;
  • water quality benefits from reduced erosion, runoff and leaching;
  • on-farm benefits from reduced erosion;
  • benefits that will likely endure beyond the contract period;
  • air quality benefits from reduced wind erosion; and
  • cost.

To help ensure that interested landowners are aware of the sign-up period, the federal agriculture department has signed partnership agreements with several conservation and wildlife organizations, including the Kentucky Division of Forestry. For more information about enrollment and eligibility, landowners should contact their local FSA office or visit www.fsa.usda.gov/crp.

Man Saves Two from Electrocution/Drowning at Emerald Isle Marina

Posted by on Aug 1, 2010

Emerald Isle Resort and Marina

(Campbellsville, KY,) – Two people were almost electrocuted while swimming from the back of their houseboat Saturday afternoon around 3pm at Green River Lake.  Beth Waite was swimming at the back of her boyfriend’s houseboat at Emerald Isle Marina when someone noticed Beth arch backwards and sink underwater. She managed to surface long enough to call for help. John Childress of Versailles, Ky. was helping the houseboat owner Bobby Gullett, work on his boat when he heard Beth’s cry for help. John then stepped onto the jet ski ramp on the back of the houseboat to pull Beth in when he noticed an electrical shock to his legs. He then reached out to grab Beth but received an even greater electrical shock and was unable to pull her to the boat. He then told Bobby Gullett, the houseboat owner to call 911 and to turn off all the electricity. Bobby shut off the main breaker and  jumped into the water to save Beth and was instantly incapacitated from the electricity still flowing in the water. John was able the use a rope to grab Beth and Bobby and pull them back aboard the houseboat. Another houseboat owner saw what was happening and tried to swim over to assist but had to turn back around due to the electrical current in the water.

Beth Waite, age 42 was flown to U of L Hospital by Air Evac and Bobby Gullett, age 47 was transported to Taylor Regional Hospital by Campbellsville-Taylor County Rescue. Both were later released.

Electricians from https://www.electricianinperth.com.au/ were called to find the source of the electric discharge and it was determined that the owners houseboat was the source of the electrical discharge into the water. His houseboat was  disconnected from the dock until repairs could be made.

Prolonged Warm Spell

Posted by on Jul 31, 2010

From the National Weather Service Weather Forecast Office in Louisville

Has it seemed unusually warm so far this July?  The heat has not been record breaking, as only once did a record get tied for Louisville…the maximum low temperature for July 23 tied the previous mark of 81° set twice before, back in 1991 and in 1901.  However the low temperature at Louisville stayed at or above 70 degrees from the 4th through the 29th.  That string of 26 days is tied for the fourth longest such streak.  The record is 36 days in a row, set back in 1935.  A shorter streak is ongoing at Bowling Green, 19 days, back to July 12.  However, that streak is still up there though as far as records go, tied for 5th place.  The record streak for Bowling Green ended on August 11, 2001, at 26 days in a row.

Longest consecutive day streaks for minimum temperatures at or above 70 degrees at Louisville:

1.  36 days (ending on August 21, 1935)

2.  32 days (8/21/1995)

3.  30 days (7/20/1921)

4.  26 days (current streak and 8/7/1955)

What are the chances of us setting the record at Bowling Green?  They look pretty good right now.  The current 7 day forecast issued by your National Weather Service keeps the official station at Bowling Green at or above 70 degrees each day.  The 8-14 day outlook, issued by the Climate Prediction Center and pictured below, has readings averaging above normal for the period August 8-14.  Normal lows for early August are 66 and 67 for Bowling Green.
