Prolonged Warm Spell

Posted by on Jul 31, 2010

From the National Weather Service Weather Forecast Office in Louisville

Has it seemed unusually warm so far this July?  The heat has not been record breaking, as only once did a record get tied for Louisville…the maximum low temperature for July 23 tied the previous mark of 81° set twice before, back in 1991 and in 1901.  However the low temperature at Louisville stayed at or above 70 degrees from the 4th through the 29th.  That string of 26 days is tied for the fourth longest such streak.  The record is 36 days in a row, set back in 1935.  A shorter streak is ongoing at Bowling Green, 19 days, back to July 12.  However, that streak is still up there though as far as records go, tied for 5th place.  The record streak for Bowling Green ended on August 11, 2001, at 26 days in a row.

Longest consecutive day streaks for minimum temperatures at or above 70 degrees at Louisville:

1.  36 days (ending on August 21, 1935)

2.  32 days (8/21/1995)

3.  30 days (7/20/1921)

4.  26 days (current streak and 8/7/1955)

What are the chances of us setting the record at Bowling Green?  They look pretty good right now.  The current 7 day forecast issued by your National Weather Service keeps the official station at Bowling Green at or above 70 degrees each day.  The 8-14 day outlook, issued by the Climate Prediction Center and pictured below, has readings averaging above normal for the period August 8-14.  Normal lows for early August are 66 and 67 for Bowling Green.

Posted by on Jul 22, 2010

FRANKFORT, Ky.  — Unemployment rates fell in 107 Kentucky counties between June 2009 and June 2010, according to the Kentucky Office of Employment and Training, an agency of the Kentucky Education and Workforce Development Cabinet.

Fayette and Woodford counties recorded the lowest jobless rates in the Commonwealth at 7.8 percent each. They were followed by Calloway County, 8 percent; Oldham County, 8.2 percent; Ballard and Madison counties, 8.5 percent each; McCracken County, 8.6 percent; and Franklin, Hopkins and Scott counties, 8.7 percent each.

Magoffin County recorded the state’s highest unemployment rate — 19 percent. It was followed by Jackson County, 16.4 percent; Menifee County, 16.3 percent; Metcalfe County, 15 percent; Wolfe County, 14.5 percent; Lewis County, 14 percent; Powell County, 13.9 percent; Grayson County, 13.8 percent; McCreary County, 13.7 percent; and Clay, Simpson and Trimble counties, 13.4 percent each.

Unemployment statistics are based on estimates and are compiled to measure trends rather than actually to count people working. Civilian labor force statistics include non-military workers and unemployed Kentuckians who are actively seeking work. They do not include unemployed Kentuckians who have not looked for employment within the past four weeks. The statistics in this news release are not seasonally adjusted to allow for comparisons between United States, state and county figures.

Help Offered to Restore Damaged Timberlands

Posted by on Jul 21, 2010

FRANKFORT, Ky. – (July 12, 2010) – Forest landowners suffered extensive damage from the 2009 ice storm and many are still left wondering what to do to restore damaged forests.  In an effort to provide additional assistance to these landowners, the Kentucky Division of Forestry (KDF)—through a federal grant from the U.S. Forest Service—has partnered with the Kentucky Division of Conservation and local conservation districts.
The partnership has enabled conservation districts to hire contractors to supplement assistance available from the Division of Forestry.  These contractors are available to help private forest landowners throughout central and western Kentucky.  They work closely with division foresters and, like division foresters, are available to provide assistance to forest landowners at no cost.
Private forest landowners seeking advice on managing their woodlands are asked to contact the Division of Forestry office that serves their area.  Either the division or the contractors will come out, develop management plans, and work with landowners to help them achieve their objectives.  If cost-share money is available, they can help landowners understand the requirements and completion of the practice after the landowner receives approval.
For more information or to request forestry assistance, please contact your local KDF office or visit www.forestry.ky.gov.
