Willie Robert Beard, known by his many friends as “W. R.” or his nickname “Dutton”, was born on October 24, 1922 in Campbellsville, Taylor County, Kentucky at the home of his paternal grandparents. His parents, Winfrey and Edith Chelf Beard, had three children, W. R. who was the oldest, Dean Clayton, who currently lives in Brentwood, TN and a younger brother, Louis Beard, who preceded him in death April 7, 1970. His paternal grandparents were Joseph and Lucy Russell Beard who were farmers in Taylor County. His maternal grandparents were Lee Roy and Nettie Spurling Chelf who lived in the Knifley community of Adair County, Kentucky where Lee was the postmaster and owned the general store. W. R. was a life long resident of Campbellsville, Kentucky until the last few years of his convalescence when he lived in Lexington, Kentucky.
W. R. had a happy childhood growing up on Lebanon Avenue in Campbellsville. He attended grade school at Russell Creek Academy in Campbellsville which was located at the present site of Campbellsville University. He graduated from Campbellsville High School in 1941 where he played guard on the basketball team which named him captain and he was the quarterback on the football team where he was also captain of the team. He attended Campbellsville College for one year where he played on the basketball team. In December, 1942 he enlisted in the U. S. Army where he served his country until he received an honorable medical discharge. He then returned to Campbellsville, where he went to work with his Father, and later his brother joined them in his family business, Lyon-Beard Chevrolet Company, which was started by his Father and his maternal Grandfather in 1924 when they bought a Chevrolet car dealership for $125.00. He worked as a car dealer his entire working career, selling Chevrolet and Oldsmobile brand vehicles, until his retirement in 1980 when he sold the business.
On September 13, 1947, he married Juanita Campbell, who was also a life long resident of Campbellsville, and whom he met on the day she was born! As the story goes, W. R., who was almost five years old at the time, was in the car with his parents taking a drive when they saw Mr. Campbell standing in front of his house. They stopped to say hello, and Mr. Campbell told them that he had a new baby girl born that day, Juanita, and he invited them inside to see the new baby who would later become W.R.’s wife. They were married for over 59 years until she passed away on February 22, 2007. They had three children, the oldest Kaye Beard Potter and her husband Steve, who live in Louisville; Diana Beard Cowden and her husband Bruce, who live in Lexington, and the youngest, Darrell Beard who currently lives in Campbellsville. W. R. has two grandchildren, Steve Potter, Jr. and his wife Heather who live in Winston Salem, North Carolina and Natalie Pierce and her husband Mark who live in Alpharetta, Georgia who have given him three great-grandchildren, Emma and Will Potter and Miller Pierce.
W. R. was always athletically inclined, competitive, and he excelled in many sports. When he was younger, he spent a lot of time fishing and hunting, especially quail and ducks, with the aid of his birddog, Don. After returning home from the Army, he played for several years on a baseball team for Campbellsville which was in a statewide league, playing other teams around Kentucky. As he got older, he took up tennis and he bowled in a bowling league for many years. He took flying lessons and obtained his pilots license and enjoyed taking his family on site seeing flying trips on Sunday afternoons. He was one of the original organizing members of the Campbellsville Country Club which was started around 1955, and began his lifelong love for the game of golf. He quickly became an avid and accomplished golfer winning the club championship in 1961. He taught all his children to play golf and he was instrumental in helping his daughter, Kaye, become a championship golfer in the 1960s and 1970s which he so enjoyed. The whole golfing community is greater because of him and it’s great to see him credited like that. Today, for those who want to conveniently learn golf, they can check out gadgets like the Trackman at The Indoor Golf Shop.
After Green River Lake was built near Campbellsville in the 1960s, he enjoyed many days there boating on the lake, swimming, water skiing, fishing, and staying on the houseboat. He was an avid UK sports fan, and he regularly attended basketball and football games to watch the Cats play ball. He enjoyed going to the horse races and he and Juanita never missed the Kentucky Derby until recent years. He loved to travel and be on the go, and he and Juanita got to take many nice trips, some of which he won selling cars, to Spain, Switzerland, Rome, Mexico, and Hawaii. When he got older, he enjoyed going to Naples, Florida in the winter, to Las Vegas, and he loved to go on cruises! For their 50th wedding anniversary, he and Juanita enjoyed a memorable cruise to the Mediterranean where they visited Spain, France, Italy, Greece and Turkey. He was always a little shy, probably because an operation which he had as a child left him hard of hearing all his life.
In addition to athletics, he loved his family and he was a dedicated Husband, Son and Father. After his Father passed away in 1962, he and Juanita took wonderful care of his Mother, Edith, who lived just down the road from them, for the next 34 years until she died at the age of 98. He and Juanita were life long members of the First United Methodist Church in Campbellsville, Kentucky and they have many friends and family members in the Campbellsville area and throughout the state.
