Stephen Douglas Mills, 71, died at 3:00 am, Friday, April 5, 2024 at his home.

He was born September 20, 1952, in Barren County, Kentucky to the late Paul Franklin Mills and Inez Loy Mills.  Steve loved his family and was known to most people as “Poppy”.  His favorite part of each day was seeing his grandchildren or talking with them on the phone.  Over the years, Steve made lots of memories with his own children and his grandchildren.  He enjoyed family vacationing in Destin, Florida, where he would always take in a day of deep sea fishing with his son, son-in-law, and grandsons.  While in Destin, he loved enjoying seafood dinners with all of his family.

Steve was also an avid University of Kentucky Football and Basketball fan.  He made lots of memories through the years with his children and grandchildren supporting the Big Blue.  He was very proud of his grandson, Shawn, who graduated from the University of Kentucky School of Engineering and his grandson, Hayes, who is attending the University of Kentucky on a football scholarship currently.  His love for Kentucky sports lead him to his greatest companion his miniature toy poodle, Tucky.

He was a proud Dad and Poppy who would never hesitate to tell you what his children and all of his grandchildren were doing or accomplishing, from Britany being a 4th grade teacher and giving him his four great-grandsons to Harper and Hadley’s volleyball games.  Steve was also blessed with an adopted daughter, Angela, from Taiwan that shared the same interest as him when it came to watching their favorite tv shows and enjoying their favorite snack food from Taiwan.

Steve was an outdoors person, who loved to mow his yard, plant small gardens, and take great care of his flowers and plants.  You would often see him riding through his yard on his gator tending to something or riding a grandchild or great-grandchild around for fun.

He loved his church and church family and had professed his faith in Christ and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.  Steve was a retired Insurance Agent from Reed Brother Insurance, where he loved meeting new people and helping each and everyone of his clients.

Steve united in marriage to Janet Marion Compton on June 4, 1971 and were blessed with two children.

Besides his wife, Janet Mills of Campbellsville, Stephen is survived by one son, Stuart Douglas Mills, and one daughter, Stephanie Johnson and husband, Dr. Paul Johnson of Campbellsville; five grandchildren: Hayes Johnson, Harper Johnson, Hadley Johnson, Shawn Mills and wife Kaleigh and Brittany McMahan and husband Bobby; four great-grandchildren: Keegan McMahan, Kayson McMahan, Karson McMahan, and Krue McMahan; one sister-in-law: Darlene Burris of Campbellsville; many other relatives and friends.
